Important tips for a functional website design

Use Title tag
Always use a title tag. A title tag is a HTML element which shows up in the browser window above the menu bar. This tag should contain a brief description about the page\’s content. Using a title relevant to the page will makes it easy for the website visitors to get an idea about the page\’s content with a glance at the title. Also, the text you are going to place in this tag is used by major search engines to identify a proper category for your website (ecommerce website, a local pet store, an information portal e.t.c., )

Site Search box
The content of a website is distributed among the inner pages along with the home page. So, when a visitor lands on the website\’s home page, a site wide search box will help the visitor quickly jump to the inner page which has got the content he is searching for. This is much better than the user navigating to each page in search of the content he is interested in.
Rich media
A picture is worth thousand words, goes an old adage. Rich media like images, audio, video and animated content certainly add that wow factor to a website. However, overdoing it has many drawbacks like slow page load time, distracting the website visitor from other valuable text information, e.t.c. The pages with heavy graphics and rich media are also penalized by search engines.
Site map
A site map is a page which has the complete navigation picture about a website\’s page structure. A site map is not only useful for a human visitor, but also helps search engines to know about all the pages of a website. Without a sitemap, the search engines may never find and index certain pages within the site at all. Also, a technically inclined user can choose to submit his website\’s sitemap to major search engines for additional value. This will eventually improve the search rankings also.
Content placement
The most importatnt content of every page should be placed preferably in the first two paragraphs. This will help website visitors as well as search engines to understand the content quickly. The minute details about the topic of the page can be placed in the next paragraphs. Use header tags like h1, h2, h3 e.t.c for easier classification of topics and sub-topics within a page. Using proper HTML tags like Header tags, strong tag, embed tag e.t.c for the main keywords in the website helps search engines and user together in understanding the key points highlighted without much effort.
Custom error pages
A very simple yet often ignored design concept is creating custom error pages for broken links or server errors. Create simple custom pages for  errors like page not found, forbidden and server errors in a non-technical language. This will help novice users to understand what the problem is and then allows them to navigate to other pages within the website. Else, they may leave the site.
