London:  Facebook is now considering to charge users for highlighting their important posts, as it is testing a new feature in New Zealand that would make comments more prominent on a user's newsfeed,reported by 'the sun'

Users in the New Zealand thought that they were being scammed after they were presented with an option to "highlight" their posts for 2$.

Facebook later confirmed that they were trialling the feature, and charging was one of the options they were considering.

Spokeswoman Mia Garlick said: "We're constantly testing new features across the site. This particular test is simply to gauge people's interest in this method of sharing with their friends."

Users who clicked on the option were offered the options to pay through Paypal or by credit card.

BT's 300Mbps broadband trials a success, rolling out 2013

BT has deemed the super-ultra-fast broadband trials it was running in Cornwall a success, promising a commercial roll out in early 2013.

When we say super-ultra-fast broadband, we're talking about 300Mbps fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) which will see fibre laid all the way to your actual home, as opposed to fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) which is slower because the fibre runs only to those messy green boxes on the street that are forever being vandalised.

The trials in St Agnes, Cornwall, saw BT testing a solution that allows it to use the existing to-the-cabinet fibre then adding on the to-the-premise bit afterwards, something it calls 'FTTP on demand'.

But first, this

With the aim to start rolling out the 300Mbps FTTP broadband by Spring 2013, that leaves a good year to fill.

Luckily BT is planning to introduce a faster variety of FTTC in 2012 as well, set to double today's downstream sppeds from 40Mbps to 80Mbps, complemented by upstream speeds of 20Mbps.

Over 7 million UK households can now access fibre broadband over BT's network, with the company hoping to see this figure rise to ten million in 2012 and to two-thirds of the UK by the end of 2014.

Verizon upgrading networks for faster download speed

Internet customers will see a world of downloading difference

On Friday, Verizon announced that it has begun taking steps to increase its domestic network capabilities to offer 100Gbps (gigabit-per-second).

Already installed for intercontinental communication, these high-volume, low-latency pipes can process a stock trade in 14.5 milliseconds, according to Verizon.

Now, the carrier wants to bring that speed to businesses, currently limited to 40Gbps, allowing them to tap into as little or as much of that data stream as possible.

The potential for all FiOS Internet customers is a world of downloading difference.

No pipe dream
Although it's yet to be announced, a network widening for business-class services is likely a stepping stone to faster data streams for home users as well.

If that pipe dream becomes a reality, consumers could download full retail-release games and movies in minutes. And faster broadband speeds means more social and online integration in games and home computer applications.

The expansion of services also comes with a remodeling of the network's architecture, said Glen Wellbrock, Verizon's Director of Optical Transport Network Architecture and Design.

Now, individual connections are only backed up by one or two alternate routes, meaning that outages spread further and cause more down-time.

A "meshed" architecture will allow the company to re-route data traffic to a wider array of pipes, theoretically keeping more consumers reliably connected.

These plans, said Wellbrock, are preliminary and forward-looking. Verizon will offer 100G connections to enterprise level customers, but predicts that most customers will only need a portion of that speed, which the company will also offer.

Potentially life-saving connectivity

As fast as the carrier hopes these connections will be, the process for getting there won't be instantaneous.

A gradual implementation of the new architecture, cabling, and re-mapped routes will take time, and the change will be gradual.

Where these measures have already been in effect, said Wellbrock, they've "gotten [Verizon] out of a lot of jams."

For example, after the earthquakes and tsunami in Japan just last year, Verizon was able to stay connected by re-routing traffic in its meshed trans-Pacific network.

The company expects that this architecture will provide the same kind of disaster insurance for the U.S. market when in place.

In terms of speed, the carrier will be bringing the same level of connectivity to all its customers that it just started to offer financial firms last month.

The 6500-Packet Optical Platfrom from Ciena has been supporting Wall Street since April 18th with its newest low-latency optical data connections.

The timing for the network upgrades has yet to be announced, so for now businesses will have to settle for a smaller bite of the pipe.

Firefox - drove up the competition

Mozilla insists that it is proud that its evangelism over open web standards has changed browsers forever, but jokes that it has wished itself up some serious competition to Firefox.

Speaking to TechRadar Mozilla principal evangelist Tristan Nitot and Chris Heilmann the principal evangelist at Mozilla for HTML5 and open web admitted that they were proud that Firefox's success was rooted in the need for an option to the now-derided IE6 from Microsoft.

And the not-for-profit company's consistent pushing of open standards has had a huge impact, with Microsoft's newer Internet Explorer versions representing a massive leap forward, and the likes of Chrome and Safari all embracing HTML5 and a more open web.

Know your roots

"Google are pushing ahead with Chrome and Microsoft are making a much better browser with IE9 – the competition is really tough and this is what I call success."We certainly know where we came from and know what we have achieved and we are very proud about this," Nitot told TechRadar.

"You have to careful in what you wish for! But we wished it and it's here now."

Heilman explained that he was personally involved in making other company's browsers better.

"What we wanted we wanted to achieve was good browsers with open standards and that was what Microsoft didn't do and now it does," he said.

"I'm actually recording videos for Microsoft talking about HTML5 for training and that's what I'm really proud of.

"We work for a not-for-profit organisation to make the web better and I don't have to be in competition with the Microsofts and the Googles and the Operas but by working with them I can influence them and be the voice of reason in that market."

The official Facebook for Android app is undoubtedly the best way to interact with Facebook on your Android smartphone. An overhauled interface (that closely resembles the iPhone app, we might add) presents seven icons for your news feed, profile, friends, photos, message in-box, events (like birthdays), and pending friend requests. Below the icon dashboard is a photo reel that lets you swipe through thumbnails of friends' recently uploaded photos, although there's no context surrounding the image until you click through to your buddy's profile page. Even then, you won't be able to enlarge the image until you click again.

The start screen is also home to a notifications bar that slides up to share the latest news. In addition, there are shortcut buttons for updating your status and searching your friend list or the global Facebook roster.

Though the update is a vast improvement to the feature-thin predecessor, we're still looking forward to seeing Facebook further refine the app.
