Although we are going to have to wait for Sony to unveil details on their next home console, websiteKotaku are stating they’ve learned some valuable information regarding Sony’s next-gen platform.
According to the source, it is going by the name of “Orbis”, which when combined with the true Latin name of Sony’s PlayStation Vita (vitae), literally means “the circle of life” (Orbis Vitae). Perhaps some kind of marketing strategy developing here? Or maybe just a cute brother to the Vita name?
The website says that it will combine an AMD x86 processor , along with an AMD Southern Islands GPU. I’ve heard of the AMD x86 rumour before (don’t get rid of the Cell Broadband Engine!), but the latter is interesting. “Southern Islands” is set to be AMD’s 2012 high-end graphics line-up, which when running in the Orbis can play games in 4K resolution (4096×2160), as well as in full 1080p 3D.
I remember how annoyed I was when I found out that my PS3 slim could not play PS2 games. Well retrogamers , I have some bad news: the Orbis might not have backwards compatibility with existing PS3 games. (Whyyyyyy?!.) In fact, the PS Orbis may even do away with used games, period. As well as this causing a lot of grief amongst gamers, it may also put small-time game shops (whom primarily buy and sell used games) out of business.
Obviously details are scarce right now, and who’s to say that Kotaku have got it right, either? What do you think about the PS Orbis?
