To be able to use your PS3 controller on your computer, first of all head over to http://www.motioninjoy.com/download and download the latest version for your required system type — if you do not know this, simply right-click on the Computer icon on your Start menu and select Properties.
Next, install the downloaded software. When the installation process is finished, plug your PS3 controller into your PC using the controller’s USB charging cable. Now open the DS3 tool and select the tab dubbed Driver Manager.
From the picture above, you see what it’s like with one controller attached (although if it’s your first time using it, there will be a red X instead of a green tick). Click Load driver to install the drivers for the controller. The controller will now work in some games.
To make it work in all games however, we need to head over to the Profiles tab.
From this tab we can configure how we want the controller to work and we can allow vibrations. You can select from a list of pre-defined controller types or you can create a custom one — if the controller isn’t being recognized in a game, you may need to create a custom one.
As you can see here, the different buttons are assigned to keys, although some are not actual keys — this can be remedied by clicking the small downward arrow next to a controller button and selecting Keystrokes and then choosing the desired key. You may still need to configure the individual keys in-game, but that is relatively simple to do.
Now your controller should work well with nearly all games you play on your PC. Happy gaming!
