We are very fortunate in that we live in a world where technology enhances the quality of our lives on a daily basis. Technology makes our lives so much easier that things were really quite different not so long ago and what we take for granted now was once more of a chore. Even less than a generation ago, to make a call you might need to find a phone box first whereas nowadays our phones are kept handily in our pockets. As amazing as the latest tech may be, however, it is easy to forget that without a particular item pretty much all of it would be useless to us. Without the humble battery, much of the tech we have had might as well be two yoghurt pots tied together to a piece of string. Without batteries, we wouldn’t have:
Imagine if you were out, and you had to call home to let others know you won’t be home for dinner, but you didn’t have a mobile phone. You would need to go out and find a telephone booth just so that you could make the call. You’d likely have to queue behind others only to find that when you do finally get to use the phone that the speaker is covered in chewing gum. If it wasn’t for the battery, chewing gum covered telephone receivers could be something we encounter on a regular basis.
The great innovators of the latest gadgets receive a great deal of praise and rightly so, after all life would be much less convenient without them. We would have less time to be doing the things we want to be doing because instead we would have to make longer journeys, and much of what gadgets do for us automatically would have to be done manually. But while we are remembering the genius pioneers that bring us the amazing technology we have, bear in mind that without the battery none of it would have even been possible.
